Tasting Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Raspberry Jam, Cane Sugar
The Komothai beautifully represents Kenyan coffee's bright complexity. It opens with one of the clearest expressions of pink grapefruit we have found in a coffee. As the coffee cools, sweet raspberry jam emerges, followed by a clean cane sugar finish. This coffee has a delicate body and a light mouthfeel. The Komothai is an excellent option for an adventurous single-origin drinker who enjoys washed coffee.
Located north of Nairobi in the central highlands of Kenya, the Komothai Barikongo Cooperative is one of 13 factories within the Komothai Farmers’ Cooperative Society. This region has a temperate climate with consistent rainfall, coupled with the high elevations and mineral-rich volcanic soil, which results in deliciously balanced coffee. Coffee grows freely in this area, allowing most households to have at least a few coffee plants on their properties, and the cooperative system offers members a consistent place to bring their cherries. Whether they produce a lot or a little, as well as resources that support the production of high-quality coffee.
